Streaming Fraud India — What It Is and How to Avoid Getting Banned

Fake streams are the fastest way to get your music removed from Spotify and JioSaavn permanently. Many Indian artists don't realise they're doing it — paying for services that use bots. Here's what counts as fraud and what doesn't.

🚫 The stakes: Spotify permanently removes artists caught with fraudulent streams — not just the track, but the entire artist profile. Western Beats and all legitimate distributors are required to remove artists from the platform when Spotify flags fraudulent streaming. There is no appeal process.

What Counts as Streaming Fraud

Bot streams🔴 Fraud

Any service that uses automated bots to stream your music. Even if you don't know the service uses bots, the streams are fraudulent and traceable back to your account.

Click farms🔴 Fraud

Services that pay people in low-cost countries to stream your track on repeat from phones. Platforms detect these through geographic anomalies and device fingerprinting.

Buying streams directly🔴 Fraud

"500,000 Spotify streams for ₹2,000" services sold on Instagram and Telegram. All fraudulent, all detectable.

Fake playlist placement🔴 Fraud

Paying services that add your track to playlists with bot followers. The plays are bot-generated and fraudulent, even if you didn't know.

Stream exchanging networks🔴 Fraud

WhatsApp or Telegram groups where artists agree to stream each other's music 100 times a day from the same few devices. Platforms detect the unnatural playback pattern.

Asking friends to loop your track⚠️ Gray area

Asking 10 friends to stream your track is legitimate. Asking friends to loop your track overnight for 8 hours on repeat crosses into suspicious patterns that platforms flag.

How Spotify and JioSaavn Detect Fraud

Both platforms use sophisticated fraud detection that looks at multiple signals simultaneously. You cannot outsmart it — the detection systems are trained on billions of legitimate streams and know what fraud looks like:

  • Geographic implausibility — 50,000 streams from an obscure country your music has never reached before
  • Device fingerprinting — the same physical device streaming multiple different accounts
  • Playback completion anomalies — bots often skip, pause, or replay in unnatural patterns
  • Account age — streams from new accounts created within days of your release
  • Listening patterns — humans don't loop a single track 200 times in one session
  • Playlist follower quality — playlists where 95% of followers have zero public activity
  • Cross-platform triangulation — huge Spotify numbers with zero JioSaavn, YouTube, or social engagement

What Is Safe and Legitimate

✅ All of these are completely legitimate:
  • Sharing your music on Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook and asking people to stream it
  • Pre-save campaigns that convert followers to Release Radar adds
  • Pitching to real human playlist curators via SubmitHub
  • Submitting to Spotify for Artists editorial pitch system
  • Running Instagram or Google Ads that link to your Spotify page
  • Collaborating with other artists for genuine mutual promotion
  • Getting your music on editorial playlists through your distributor
  • Paying for ads that drive real listeners to your Spotify or JioSaavn page

What to Do If You've Already Used a Fraudulent Service

If you've used a stream-buying service in the past and haven't been flagged yet: stop immediately. Do not use the service again. Platforms do rolling audits — past fraud can surface and trigger removals months after the streams occurred.

If you've already been flagged by Spotify and your music was removed: contact Western Beats support. In some cases, if the fraud was limited and the artist demonstrates they understand the violation, a fresh start under a new profile may be possible — but this is at Spotify's sole discretion and is not guaranteed.

Build real streams — distribute through Western Beats.
